Four Hotel Reservations

While at Gressac I realized that my flight to Morocco left too early in the morning to take a train from Montpellier. This means I needed a hotel in Marseille. I found a reasonable priced online and booked a room.

Hotel Reservation 1: Hotel Premiere Class June 5-6
It took me about 20 seconds to realize that unfortunately my flight is on the 5th. So I changed my reservation.

Hotel Reservation 2: Hotel Premiere Class June 4-5
I actually kept this one for a few days, until my email of "Do you have an airport shuttle?" came back with a no. So I found a slightly more expensive hotel that did.

Hotel Reservation 3: Etap Hotel Vitrolles June 4-5
I had a non-eventful train ride to the Vitrolles (Marseille's Airport) train stop, and took the shuttle to the hotel. Only to find the Vitrolles Etap Hotel is about 7 km away. So I asked them to switch my reservation at 17h53.

Hotel Reseration 4: Etap Hotel Marignianne June 4-5
Luckily for me French hotels (or at least Etap and Premiere Classe) have liberal cancellation policies which allow no charge cancellation up until 18h00 the day of your reservation. So with 7 minutes to spare, I get my final reservation and find my room.

Montpellier was play Toulouse in the national rugby final, so I settled in for the night and watched that. I was disappointed that they gave the game away in the last 10 minutes.

In the morning I took the shuttle to the airport 2 hours early, and there was NO ONE there. Like 3 total non-employees. I have never gotten so much personal attention at the airport. 15 minutes after I arrive, I get to the gate. The old Moroccan man across the terminal is yelling at an inappropriate volume in arabic into his outdated cell phone. Some things dont change across cultural boarders.

I get on the plane, and have a pretty uneventful flight. I will note however that RyanAir should be renamed New-Born Air. There were about 15 infants on my flight and I have to say I was impressed: they must have coordinated beforehand because they had their work schedule down so there was always one of them crying at all times during the 2 hour flight. They finished with a grand finale during touchdown but what did I care? I was in Morocco.

  1. Ha, if I'd had known you were flying Ryan Air I would have Skyped you before you left with an eye to having a poignant "last-thing-I-ever-said-to-my-brother-before-one/both-wing(s)-fell-off-his-bootleg-Irish-discount-airplane-over-the-Mediterranean" moment. Glad you made it there safely, crying babies and all.
